Description At Facebook Reality Labs our goal is to make great consumer virtual, augmented, and mixed reality experiences that ship in five to ten years. Come work alongside world leading scientists and engineers to create the technology that makes VR and AR pervasive and universal. We are seeking a Research Scientist to design, test and characterize state of the art prototype architectures, mechanisms and solutions for next generation AR and VR devices that can create transformative experiences. You will be part of a team exploring new concepts through analytical modeling, prototyping and experimental testing. A wide range of approaches will be explored combining electrical, mechanical, robotics, firmware, and software. We want people who: work well in teams, can brainstorm big ideas, work in new technology areas, are able to drive a concept from a prototype to a product, and can work collaboratively across a wide range of disciplines. Starting with a broad scientific and strong electro-mechanical background, be willing to become a quick expert in a new area and rapidly make an impact. We’re looking for a hands-on experimentalist in electro-mechanical systems that can enable new research into motion sensing. This is a full-time position based in Redmond, WA.


  • Design, test, characterize, and lead the planning and execution of cutting-edge research to advance the state of the art in motion sensing

  • Develop experimental hardware, testing and characterization apparatus

  • Collaborate with other engineers and researchers to prototype hardware and software solutions, experiments and concepts that advance the entire project


  • Available to start employment on or after January 1, 2019

  • Must obtain work authorization in country of employment at the time of hire, and maintain ongoing work authorization during employment

  • 3+ years experience developing or working on the design, testing and characterization of accelerometers, gyroscopes, IMUs, biometrics and associated algorithms

  • 3+ years experience with MATLAB, C/C++, Python and embedded systems


  • Currently has or is in the process of obtaining a PhD degree or completing a postdoctoral assignment in the field of Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics or similar
