Facebook is looking for an Automation Engineer, Archival Storage Engineer that is passionate about technology, about solving complex storage archival challenges, and ready to redefine infrastructure to meet the scale-out storage needs. The ideal candidate will have experience designing and building automation hardware for archival storage while translating products requirements from infrastructure customers, working with hardware libraries, developing hardware that intersect with roadmaps, and working with qualification teams to develop and execute test plans.


  • Design backup storage infrastructure while considering many aspects, including, but not limited to, performance, cost, capacity, endurance, durability, data integrity, power efficiency and data center compatibility.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop specifications for tape storage libraries.

  • Understand requirements from storage application teams and translate those to viable hardware solutions.

  • Work closely with tape media, tape drive and library vendors to propose, develop, test and deploy technology optimized for Facebook data centers.

  • Understand the underlying technologies of Tape Automated libraries, Tape Drives to develop optimized archival solutions.

  • Evaluate various storage technology archival solutions, from HW components and architecture to data transport protocols and topologies.

  • Design and assist development of automation infrastructure to allow all diagnosis of HW faults and tools for inducing faults.


  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Robotics, Computer Engineering or related field.

  • 5+ years of industry experience developing or working with mechatronic, embedded systems, control algorithms.

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience working in Linux/Unix environment.


  • Knowledge of embedded system designs and micro-controllers/microprocessors.

  • Experience with storage and network interfaces (Ethernet, SAS, SATA, PCIe).

  • Experience in tape library operations in data center environments.

  • Experience with Tape media/Drive qualification processes.

  • Familiar with object and block storage applications and protocols.
